Mandela Day: Turning Purpose into Lasting Impact
Every year Mandela Day reminds us that building a better society is a shared responsibility. At Bidvest Protea Coin, we treat that responsibility as ongoing, not confined to 67 minutes. Mandela Day is an occasion to reflect and to reinforce our long-term commitment to sustainable community upliftment.
Bidvest Protea Coin embeds community impact in how we operate. We partner with YouthZones and AmaVerkykers to deliver structured, sustainable programmes that create jobs, develop skills and restore dignity. A flagship example is our support for one of the Amaverkykers initiatives, Matlakala Amabotse — Beautiful Rubbish — an initiative that transforms discarded uniforms and materials into marketable products while creating livelihoods and entrepreneurship opportunities in vulnerable communities.
Matlakala Amabotse began over a decade ago by turning the cost and challenge of disposing used uniforms into an opportunity. By removing identifying tags and repurposing fabric, the project produces cushions, clothing, benches and other items.
The initiative has expanded into skills transfer, business incubation and adaptive social enterprise. The project’s philosophy — finding value in what others discard — mirrors our approach to social investment: to recycle potential into sustainable prospects.
This Mandela Day week, Bidvest Protea Coin donated more than 200 blankets, groceries, toiletries and cleaning materials to multiple schools and shelters, including Masikhule Pre-School, Moeggesukkel, Learn & Play Pre-School, Rising Stars Day Care and Frederick. These donations were distributed throughout the week, reinforcing that our support is continuous and community-focused, not limited to a single day of activity.
We celebrate these outcomes and reaffirm our commitment to long-term social impact. Our role is to fund, partner and enable initiatives that convert compassion into practical, measurable change.
